Roop, Shelly

Dyslexia/ Special Education Teacher

Hello, I’m Shelly Roop and I am blessed to teach special education and dyslexia classes
this year at Newcastle ISD.  I grew up in Plano where I attended school until my junior
year when I transferred to LV Berkner in Richardson and graduated in 1986. I was very
active in Choir, pep squad and keywanettes.  After high school, I attended Richland
Junior college where I was a college cheerleader for 2 years before transferring to
University of North Texas and becoming a proud member of Delta Zeta Sorority.  My final
year of college, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with a
minor in Early child-hood from Texas Woman’s University.  I began to substitute at
schools in the area during my last several years of college and found my calling in
Special Education.  I continued to substitute and take classes at Region 11 in the Special
education alternative certification  program.  During the alternative program a  former
professor offered me a position teaching students with special needs in her district.  I fell
in love with teaching special needs students and continued to teach there for several
years until my family and I moved to Granbury, Texas in 2000. I was offered a position in
Granbury ISD and taught in Granbury for over 20 years as a special education teacher. I
have taught pre-k-12 th grade, coached JV and Varsity Cheer at Granbury High School, as
well as coached rec. baseball, softball, soccer, pee wee cheer, and Volleyball. We had a
dream to own a ranch, and we followed our dream when we relocated to Olney, Texas.
My husband Mike and I have been married for 31 years, and have three beautiful children.
Chase is 29 years old, he’s a fireman/ paramedic in Southlake. His wife, our beautiful
daughter in law Nikki, is a Southlake police officer, and they blessed us with our first
wonderful granddaughter Remi. Our middle son, Chandler is 25 years old, engaged to his
high school sweetheart Andi, and attends graduate school where he is a second year
medical student in Illinois. Abbie is our youngest energetic 19 year old that has begun
her college journey at MSU.  We are so blessed to be a part of the Newcastle family and
feel so welcome.
